singers

Leah Cotterell voice
Barbara Fordham voice
Anje West voice, djembe and claves

Three of Queensland’s finest professional singers are coming to sing for us! They sing songs from all over the world in a style called a cappella – this means without tuned instruments, just voices with some percussion. They use claves and a djembe.

Iko Iko

This song is great fun and we have had a great time learning to sing it. It was originally called Jockamo, which means ‘jester’. It’s the kind of song that’s used in Mardi Gras festivals and parades. The song comes from a race of people called ‘Cajun’, who live in America.

Wali Lay

This song is a lullaby from Tanzania in the continent of Africa. Can you find it on the map in our classroom? The words mean “Hush baby, go to sleep”. Through music, singing and clapping, African children learn about family, community, tribe and country. The simple song repeats the same melody over and over.
