Awesome Aussies
Awesome Aussies @ Boisdale Consolidated School
Awesome Aussies is a new specialist program at Boisdale Consolidated School in 2009. The programs intention is to teach Australian culture, friendship and citizenship skills in order develop the most awesome Australian citizens we can.
First term concluded with an Awesome Aussie Day in which students and teachers dressed up as their Australian hero and celebrated the day with a variety of Australian traditions and activities. One highlight was the opportunity for students to make damper and butter for morning tea while Junior School Council provided a yummy lunch of traditional snags in bread.
To conclude the first semester, a Multicultural Day was held in which our students participated in activities from a variety of different cultures.
The program includes the Boisdale Consolidated School Junior School Council. This council is very active in fundraising, social service and collaboration with the wider community. Boisdale Consolidated School sponsors Las May, a child in the Philippines, through World Vision. We also support the Briagolong RSL through our ANZAC project. Within this project students and families make Anzac biscuits and sell them prior to Anzac day to promote awareness of and make a monetary contribution to the RSL. Junior School Council have made a recipe book which is available for sale through our office. Proceeds from this and other in school fundraisers support ongoing programs and special events.
Simpson and his Donkey
This year in Awesome Aussie we remembered Anzac Day a little differently. We had a visit from Simpson and his donkey. “Simpson” told students of his time in Gallipoli and answered questions.

“John Simpson” Alison Robertson and “Duffy”.
Awesome Aussie Day
On Thursday 2nd April, we recognised Australian culture with an Awesome Aussie Day. Students dress up as their favourite Aussie characters and participated in Aussie activities. We made damper, butter, bark pictures and gumleaf bookmarks. Students played Aussie games, sang Aussie songs, listened to great Australian stories, created new Aussie flags and painted boomerangs. Of course the day wouldn’t have been complete without a snag in bread for lunch. We had a great time appreciating many aspects of Australian culture.
Making butter in a jar......
No point having butter without damper!
Multicultural Day
We celebrated multicultural Day at BCS on the 23rd June this year. Children dressed up in costumes traditional to other countries and celebrated the day participating in a variety of activities. Students made pasta, sang, danced, made traditional handicrafts and listened to stories from overseas. The morning was a great success concluding with a parade and a yummy pasta lunch. Celebrating Australia’s multiculturalism is very important at Boisdale as we promote diversity and tolerance.
Harmony Quilt
After celebrating cultural diversity and tolerance on Multicultural Day, Awesome Aussie students contributed to our school harmony quilt. Each child was asked to draw a picture to represent peace and harmony. As you can see, the results were spectacular. It is great to have a piece of artwork the whole school has contributed to and with such a positive message. The quilt is on display for everyone to enjoy at BCS. Please come in and see what can be achieved when we all work together.
Bully Busters at Boisdale
In Awesome Aussies we have discussed bullying and the role of the bysander in detail. These messages are constantly reinforced in each classroom. This year we have run a competition to come up with bully bystander posters and great slogans to support our anti bullying message. Winners of each competition have had their posters and catchy slogans immortalised with posters being copied, laminated and displayed around the school and the slogans made into wristbands. During the presentations of our winning posters we were all surprised with a visit from our very own anti bullying super hero “Bully Buster”. While our students are already vigilant in stamping out bullying, we also have our own secret weapon. Keep your eyes open for more glimpses of BCS’s own super hero!
Mardi Gras
Our Awesome Aussies participated in the Maffra Mardi Gras this year with a float illustrating the consolidation of the surrounding seven schools to make Boisdale Consolidated School. Our famous Marimba band played on the float and we can proudly report that we won the school entry competition. Watch out for next years entry!!!
